Engines Off, Shore Power On

Protecting our planet has never been more important. Finding alternative, sustainable energy sources is at last receiving the attention of industries and governments alike. As filmmakers, we can inspire positive change by telling the stories of those who are leading the way with innovative, transformative practices.

Our film ‘Engines Off, Shore Power On’ takes us to Rotterdam where Heerema Marine Contractors (an offshore company), alongside their partners Eneco, the Port of Rotterdam and local marine stakeholders, have built the world’s largest shore power connection. As a result, Heerema’s two major crane vessels can now run on green energy, generated by on-site wind turbines. This removes Heerema’s dependency on diesel, previously required to power the electricity for vessel maintenance and repairs, when docked in the Caland Canal. This project was both trailblazing and complex, but the results speak for themselves: a reduction of 15,000 tons in CO2 emissions, less noise pollution and an exemplary environmental case study for the global marine industry to follow.
