The Fogo Island Co-operative Society was born out of a difficult decision to either resettle the entire community or to stay and build something that could sustain their way of life long into the future. They chose to stay and turn to the sea, just as generations before them had done. To help them expand on their triumphant story, we produced a brand video rooted in rural tradition, authenticity, and pride of place. The video brings the Co-operative’s values to life by connecting viewers to the sea, the work, and the community behind every catch. What they do is about so many things but at the heart is a story of resilience and community that can only be told by the people themselves. We worked closely with the Co-op and the people of the community to learn their stories so we could tell them in the most authentic way possible. We knew it was important to capture all aspects of life on Fogo Island and the surrounding area because the Co-op has had a hand in every part from job creation, to ocean stewardship, to family life. We were also able to access footage from the National Film Board of Canada from when the Co-op was formed that we incorporated to frame the story from its very inception. The result of our collaboration is a powerful narrative piece that honours the Co-op’s legacy by showing how their history still guides them to this day but that their focus is firmly on the future and the generations yet to come.
