The Problem: The "Engagement Gap" Every year, Blacktown City Council faced a common public sector hurdle: the ‘ticking the box’ exercise. Traditional end-of-year videos were often static, uninspiring reports of metrics and milestones that failed to engage Council’s 2,000+ employees or the diverse community they serve. We realized that to truly celebrate their achievements, we needed to move beyond the screen and bridge the gap between a corporate update and a genuine human connection. The Solution: A Late Night Revolution We didn't just want to shoot another video; we wanted to blow everyone's minds. The solution was Blacktown Live, a high-octane, immersive experience modelled after a late-night talk show. Teaming up with Shootsta, we transformed the Coliseum at West HQ into a professional television studio. To anchor the event, we secured Australia’s most iconic talk-show host, Rove McManus. This wasn't a standard presentation; it was a full-scale production featuring: Five Director-Led Creative Videos: We collaborated with each directorate to produce their own unique ‘hero’ content, ranging from a superhero-themed asset report to a comedic ‘hostage negotiation’ style planning video. A ‘Staff as Stars’ Philosophy: From a local first-aider to a long-serving 55-year veteran, the show turned the lens on the people behind the projects. Interactive Engagement: Real-time games like ‘Know Your Council’ pitted staff members against the Mayor and CEO, shattering traditional hierarchies through humour. The Story: From Chaos to Connection The journey was fraught with ‘production-killing’ hurdles. With only a two-month window, the team faced silent talent leads, venue scarcities, and a last-minute date change that threatened to derail the entire project. Miraculously, the stars aligned on December 12. Over 800 employees filled the Coliseum, creating the largest turnout for any council-run staff event in history. The result was a project that redefined how a local government communicates: transitioning from a checklist to a ‘crowning achievement’ that fostered community pride and employee morale.
