About The Entry

"A World in a Seed:Yungang Grottoes Art Exhibition" is exhibited at Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan, marking the first cultural and artistic exhibition presented by the Yungang Research Institute in Taiwan region of China. As a testament to the peak of Buddhist art in the 5th century, the Yungang Grottoes embody the profound Northern Wei belief in "the coexistence of meditative contemplation and devotional worship." Through immersive digital displays, we aim to enable audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds to truly perceive the artistic style and spiritual connotations of the Yungang Grottoes.

The exhibition’s concept is derived from the Buddhist allusion "Mount Sumeru in a Mustard Seed," which means "containing the vast Mount Sumeru within a tiny mustard seed." This allusion not only metaphorizes the cosmology of "grandeur residing in minuteness" but also echoes the Buddhist philosophy of the Trichiliocosm (Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds). The concept runs through the image structure, presenting intricate carvings and grand spatial scenes under a unified visual logic.

The spatial imagery is based on Cave 38 of the Yungang Grottoes. Adorned with carvings depicting the Buddha’s Jātaka tales, karmic stories, and didactic narratives, this cave is renowned for its rigorous structure, rich themes, and solemn forms, representing the highest artistic level of sculpture among the western caves of Yungang. Based on high-precision digital scanning, STUDIO10 integrates 3D restoration, dynamic image compositing, and spatial soundfield design to achieve full digital restoration and artistic reinterpretation of the cave’s space and statues. It constructs a time-transcending immersive realm, allowing audiences to connect with the meditative serenity, compassion, and wisdom that have flowed through the grottoes for millennia.

We hope that through the integration of digital art and technology, cultural heritage can transcend the limitations of space and form. This ancient culture, which has endured for thousands of years, will extend into new life forms in the digital age, showcasing its unique cultural value and ideological depth in a more open global context.
