The visual style was guided by an initial client request, which we picked up and developed into the visual style in the final animation. Bold, saturated colours and graphic coloured lighting. We made particular usage of 2D animation for all VFX elements, such as dust, smoke, surface impacts and motion indicators. This approach helped to elevate the piece above the expected norm for this style. Active, hand-held style camera moves helped to immerse the viewer right in the middle of the melee action, heightening the viewing experience and drawing the viewer right into the world of the Galaxy Fight Club.
Due to a challenging production timescale and budget, we decided to use game engine technology in the form of Unreal Engine, alongside our normal 3D pipeline software, to assemble, edit our sequence and light all of our shots in 3D space. This allowed a fast pace of visual iteration and allowed us to experiment with camera, lighting and motion all within the final visual scenario and make creative decisions quickly, without having to wait for the normal slow process of offline rendering and compositing.
