The Air University Global College of Professional Military Education (PME) desired to increase engagement and level of learning on newly updated distance learning courses at IMI Level I and II for enlisted PME (EPME) by adding elements at IMI Level III.
Seeking to deliver these elements cost-effectively and quickly, with the required comprehensive instructional integrity, the Global College/C2 Team reviewed the IMI Level III simulations previously developed and delivered for four resident programs as part of a blended training solution: Airman Leadership School (ALS), Noncommissioned Officer Academy (NCOA), Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy (SNCOA), and Chief’s Leadership Course (CLC).
Determining that the learning objectives and lesson sequencing between the updated distance learning courses and in-residence courses were most similar for two of the four programs, the team proceeded to adapt the simulations from those two programs for fully-online delivery.
The simulations contain multiple decision points that branch based on student inputs, ensuring that each student’s experience is unique. The simulations give students the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge gained via the online courses in a safe environment with automated instructor-like feedback.
The simulations are SCORM-compliant web applications that communicate directly with the Air University (AU) Learning Management System (LMS) through an LTI authentication process. For students without full-time online access or for those in low bandwidth locations (i.e., forward-deployed to combat zones around the world), the simulations can also operate in stand-alone mode. The web applications are fully responsive for delivery across all types of learning platforms (desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone).
