For Southern California Gas Company, the determination of the varying levels of corrosion on an exposed gas pipe was a subjective application of gas standard protocols. While employees could agree on egregious examples of corrosion which would require pipeline replacement, gas standards required employees to evaluate and codify more intermediate examples of corrosion for which clear-cut examples were not readily available.
