The Ringling Ghost is a 23-minute student-led mockumentary created to launch a new YouTube presence for Ringling College’s Film Department. Conceived, written, and directed by a single faculty member through his studio Active Octopus, the project engaged BFA film students across production and postproduction roles to build a unified digital storytelling platform for the department. The film expands upon an 80-year-old campus legend involving a ghost known as Mary. To reframe that lore for a contemporary audience, the project introduced the fictional figure “Ewan Gillies,” whose tragic connection to the land beneath the Film Department's editing suites provided the foundation for a new narrative world. Presented in the style of a true-crime documentary, the film blends fiction with recognizable campus environments, allowing real student spaces and production culture to appear naturally within the story. A coordinated social media rollout preceded the October 5 premiere. Minimalist vertical teasers offered cryptic visual clues tied to the ghost story, building intrigue without revealing that the narrative was fictional. The campaign culminated in a YouTube watch-party event that also debuted new student-made films, ensuring the channel launched with meaningful depth. In its first two months, the new channel generated more than 35,000 organic views and thousands of hours of watch time: achieved with no budget, no paid promotion, and no institutional marketing support. The project served as both an entertainment piece and the ignition point for a long-term content ecosystem built to raise awareness of a small BFA-only program competing with far larger film schools. The Ringling Ghost demonstrates how storytelling, world-building, and student collaboration can become the foundation of a sustainable digital brand identity, even in an environment with limited resources.
