This year, PGA TOUR overhauled their digital products to become the definitive next-generation fan experience platform and give golfers and enthusiasts the chance to connect with the key moments that matter. As golf’s popularity grows, fans are engaging with the TOUR in more ways than ever, through fantasy and betting options, and joining the millions who annually attend live tournaments. To meet this increasing interest, PGA TOUR relaunched their website to enhance the fans’ enjoyment of the game – by bringing them closer than ever to their favorite players and tournaments.
Everything was rebuilt, including the technology that supports the website. As the PGA TOUR’s agency, Work & Co led digital strategy, design, and development of the new platform. Work & Co also developed a new cohesive visual identity for the TOUR’s platforms – Haskell, a unifying design system built to work across a diverse and growing set of touchpoints, which was greatly influenced by conversations with devoted fans, legendary players, and the TOUR’s own history.
A real-time leaderboard and stats alongside video, photography, and stories make the data easier to digest, with immersive video and aerials that make fans feel like they’re on the course. These new features bring fans directly into the competition, elevate their experience with the TOUR’s unique access, help connect them with the golfers and stories they cared about, and do it in a near-instantaneous fashion while prioritizing aesthetic presentation.
Among the technology advancements:
New iOS and iPad apps developed with Apple’s latest UI framework SwiftUI and a custom architecture
Architected for real-time updates on the leaderboard, player stats and more (achieved with AWS AppSync) on the back-end
New backend/middleware layer that removes business logic from the frontend, increases scalability, and simplifies maintenance
As the platform evolves, the team will continue launching more features that continue to bring fans closer to the game, including the ability to connect fan accounts for tickets and enable streaming so experiences can be consolidated on one platform. Future integration of augmented reality and new features will enhance the on-site experience, as well.
