Homecore (2022) is a virtual art experience that explores the themes of loss of identity and the pursuit of self-reclamation in the modern city, using Virtual Reality to immerse the viewer in the narrative. The story depicts a girl's repetitive and mundane daily life in a packed and narrow urban home, which is disrupted when she discovers an egg creature that brings about changes to her environment. The purpose of this virtual narrative is to bring attention to the mental suffering caused by the suffocating effects of urbanization.
Homecore(2022)'s surreal depiction of a home constructed from its resident's dreams, pursuits, and lifestyle highlights the relationship between a person's home and their sense of identity. Frequent changes in one's environment, such as those experienced through urbanization or frequent moves, can lead to a loss of belonging and disorientation. The piece highlights the feelings of depression, anxiety, and disorientation people often face in a fast-paced modern city.
Animated in 3D and presented in a VR headset, this piece's narrative core celebrates self-love, acceptance, and the power of dreaming in an experiential and psychological way. The experience serves as a call to action to pay attention to one's being, existence, and accomplishments and encourages individuals to slow down and find their true selves. Visually, the egg symbolizes the metamorphic process of emerging from a cocoon to become a butterfly, paralleling the girl's self-discovery process.
Homecore(2022) is selected to be shown on the 16th and Arapahoe screen in downtown Denver, the Palm Springs Animation Festival, DELETE TV Film Festival, and in a solo digital art event organized by Denver Digerati. Homecore(2022) has also won the Creative Quarterly(Issue 71) Award, and a Special Mention in the United Kingdom 01 NFT | New Media | Experimental | Digital Arts Film Festival 2023.
