The National Theatre is a hugely popular national institution. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic they were forced to close. This meant they had to find new ways to engage with their audience and deliver on their remit of making theatre accessible to everyone.
This presented an opportunity for the NT to produce a brand-new service and continue their remit of entertaining the nation, and this is exactly what they did. Within one week of the UK officially entering lockdown, they launched NT@Home, a 17-week program delivering NT Live content (live cinema screenings of theatre globally) for free via the National Theatre’s channel on YouTube. The release of the video content caused a social moment and provided an opportunity to build a new audience for the future of the National Theatre – critical during these times
