About The Entry
Inspired by conversations with my grandmother about my childhood in rural China, this project is a tribute to inherited kindness as the most enduring form of wealth. Growing close to the wild nature, I witnessed a quiet rhythm of living—where care for multiple forms of lives was rarely spoken, but always practiced. Through the story of Lina and her grandmother, I wanted to honor that subtle generosity. When the grandmother falls ill, Lina begins receiving mysterious gifts left at her doorstep. These offerings—later revealed to be from mountain animals—are not fantasy alone, but a poetic return of years of unnoticed compassion. The narrative reflects on reciprocity between humans and nature, suggesting that empathy never disappears; it simply waits to return in another form. This body of work became a fully developed 20-spread educational fiction picture book, originally created for a children’s book festival. I approached it not simply as a series of illustrations, but as a complete narrative world. Character arcs, pacing, and environmental storytelling were carefully constructed to immerse young readers in a space that feels intimate yet expansive. The project is publication-ready and designed to resonate with publishers seeking emotionally meaningful and culturally rooted children’s literature. Technically, the illustrations were created digitally in Clip Studio Paint while reinterpreting the softness of pastel and mineral pigment painting styles. I chose this visual language because it echoes my earliest and most authentic interactions with nature—drawing and painting directly on roush textures such as stones as a child. That tactile dialogue with rock, soil, and wind shaped my sensitivity to texture and space. By recreating layered surfaces—weathered stone walls, moss, earth, and mist—I aim to translate that lived experience into visual storytelling. Through this approach, I hope children not only read about nature, but feel invited to notice it, touch it, and form their own relationship with the natural world.
